The Misadventures of Breastfeeding a 2 year old

Yup, I said it. I am still breastfeeding my 2-year-old.

*cue the gasping or screaming in shock*

“You want to breastfeed that baby?”

“You’re forcing her to drink it.”

“She doesn’t eat regular food?”

“Why don’t you try (insert bottle brand or weaning method)* here.”

My response is usually a long essay that is something like this.

Yes, she does eat food. She just finished an entire meal. I have tried that bottle and she did not use it. Yes, that pacifier as well. I can count how many times she ever drank out of a bottle. It’s 7, yes it’s 7 times total. She will stop when she is ready, and no, she doesn’t bite me.

At this point, people just look confused and say, “If you say so”. With their judgy faces and side-eyes.

My baby, keyword MY (I share her with my husband lol). It’s up to us to raise her, let’s let that marinate. Read and repeat. Okay back to it.

It’s up to us to raise her, and if her comfort since birth is my knee-length boobs ( lol cause um, mom life) , then so be it. It’s not up to you to decide when or why she should quit. Yes, it gets overwhelming sometimes and I want my body back, but if 2-3 years of her life, that I hope surpasses 100, consists of bonding with her mommy through the comforts of breastmilk, well matter so be it. She deserves that, and your judgmental self won’t change my mind. It just makes me occasionally feel shitty. Thanks, jerk but save your unwarranted opinions for someone who cares.
